In as much as David felt these ways, he always turned to the Lord and cried out to Him. I know that some teach that you shouldn't "confess" the circumstances, but David did continually throughout the Psalms. I know that some teach that if you have faith, you will never feel fear, but David cried out plenty of times that he was afraid. And despite this, he is considered a powerful man of faith.
We believe, therefore, that declaring the circumstances to God is merely opening your heart to the Lord and asking for His help. We also believe that the following statement is true:
Genuine faith is not necessarily the absence of fear.
Too often in the Christian circle, we rely on our emotions and our mental strength to try and manufacture what God gives us by His Spirit. We try to generate faith by "not confessing" (or identifying) the circumstances. We try to claim faith by denying our own fears or frustrations. These things can manufacture a mental or emotional faith (which some have relied on and caused great harm to the reputation of the Christian Faith). But I believe that genuine faith will be able to see the circumstances, be afraid or doubtful; and yet bring the circumstances, our fears, and our doubts to the Lord in prayer and supplication. Yes, sometimes we need to look away to focus on the Lord. Sometimes we need to ignore the things around us, or to not mention them. But I believe that in most cases, we should identify these things and bring them to the Lord in prayer. These psalms are perfect examples of this:
Psalm 7:1-2
"O Lord my God, I take refuge in you; save and deliver me from all who pursue me, or they will tear me like a lion and rip me to pieces with no one to rescue me."
Psalm 13
"How long, O Lord? Will you forget me forever?...Give light to my eyes, or I will sleep in death; my enemy will say, 'I have overcome him'...But I trust in your unfailing love..."
Psalm 17:11-14
"They have tracked me down, they now surround me...They are like a great lion crouching in cover...O Lord, by your hand save me from such men..."
Psalm 42:11
"Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise Him, my Savior and my God."
It is during the times of desperation that our faith needs to be activated. This faith is not necessarily an emotional absence of fear, but an active step by taking that fear to God, submitting it to Him, and then declaring and standing upon His Word.
